Japantown Festival 2010

My “standalone art” assignment for Metro on Sunday was to shoot the Japantown Healthy Food & Green Festival in Midtown. Unfortunately it wasn’t the nicest weather – it was raining on and off all day – but fortunately, as a result it wasn’t crowded at all and when the rain let up it was pleasant wandering through. I got to eat my first okonomiyaki (pictured below) since we went to London last year. It’s basically a really delicious Japanese omelette, but with the kind of ingredients that you could have it... Park51 Protest

Yesterday was a really interesting day to shoot. My first assignment was a protest (and counter-protest) at 11am by 51 Park Place, where Cordoba House – or Park51, as it has been renamed – is supposed to be built. The so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” – which is neither a mosque, nor is it proposed to be built at Ground Zero. I digress. Anyway, this is the most heated political discussion I’ve seen in NYC, seriously, since the Subway Series 10 years ago. People are REALLY into it, on both sides. It was... Read The Rest →

Dominican Day Parade 2010

On assignment for Metro yesterday, I caught the tail end of the Dominican Day Parade in Manhattan. It ran along 6th Avenue from 36th to 52nd Street. I managed to squeeze in around 47th Street and grab a few shots before the heat and humidity and people mushed together like anchovies forced me to step out of the crowd. It was a pretty fun time, everyone was really happy and dancing and decked out in their flag. Share → Tweet

Survey Says: No. | NYC Photographer

Yesterday the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to deny landmark status to 45-47 Park Place, a building two blocks from Ground Zero that has been empty since 9/11. The current plan is to build a 13-story community center and mosque in its place. It’s been a very controversial topic over the last few weeks, and there’s been a fair amount of protest. Personally, I think the vote was correct. I strongly believe that the separation of church and state has to trump everything, even people’s emotions. Read the full Metro... Read The Rest →

Imagination Playground | NYC Photographer

This past Tuesday I was sent out on an assignment for Metro to shoot the grand opening of a new park at South Street Seaport called Imagination Playground. It’s designed to promote creativity by allowing for unstructured play. There are big blue blocks that can be moved around and used to build with (or hit each other of course, as I saw some kids doing). There’s also an interesting spin on the sandbox and some cool water fountains. I wish there’d been a playground like this in my neighborhood when... Read The Rest →

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2010 | NYC Photographer

Two weekends ago I went to Governors Island on assignment for Metro. The assignment was to cover the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party, an annual event thrown by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra. It was one of the cutest parties I’ve ever been to. For $10, anyone could come and picnic on a giant lawn and listen to ’20s jazz tunes or cut a rug on the provided dancefloor. There was food and drink (even some alcohol!) to be purchased, or you could bring your own. To top it... Read The Rest →
